"I've started to really appreciate the resilience that humans have. Everyone has issues in their lives which bother them, and everyone can feel vulnerable and crack under the pressures they're facing."
- Rio Blake
Introducing London-Based Photographer Rio Blake. After taking up photography at the age of fifteen as a way of creating memories for herself and her friends, she has since worked with clients ranging from Adidas to the Photographers Gallery. We spoke to her about her work...
What would be a typical day in the life of Rio Blake?
More & more I'm trying to live each day as it comes, but typically I wake up & thank the universe for everything i'm grateful for - then I head out to scout locations and shoot.
What attracted you to photography?
I've always been a very visual person & I've always loved the idea of capturing a moment in all its glory. I like that images can give you a real sense of an atmosphere you may have never even experienced first hand.
How would you describe your work?
Intimate, cinematic & personal
What do you love most to photograph?
I love taking photos of people. Setting up portraits, taking candids of people on the street - any kind of photo where I get to look at a face
Last song you listened to?
Real - Kali Uchis
Your aspirations as an artist?
I hope that I can travel the world through my photography and that I can open up photography as a medium that the average person could learn to appreciate. I want photography to be as fluid & touching as music is - where everyone who is presented it has an opinion.
What is something you love about humans?
I've started to really appreciate the resilience that humans have. Everyone has issues in their lives which bother them, and everyone can feel vulnerable and crack under the pressures they're facing. There are people who go throw trials and tribulations that I know I certainly couldn't handle - and its that human strength to be able to think clearly and hold your head up high that I truly admire.
